Sizing up Socket Sets

Socket sets for mechanics come in all different varieties, and while these automotive tools prove useful, it's not necessary to have every possible size socket made. For mechanics that are just starting out, there are standard socket sets that provide a range of mechanics tools to do basic vehicle repair work. For example, standard sockets sets tend to include the following sockets sizes: 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, 11/16, 3/4, 13/16 and 7/8 inches.

Look for socket sets that carry this range of socket sizes and feature a headlock grip to prevent rounding of the fasteners. Well-made sockets are constructed of nickel/chrome plating and have been heat treated. Also pick up socket sets that come with their own storage rack to keep them neat, organized, and mobile. If you require other mechanics hand tools, there are larger combination sets that contain socket sets as well as a range of automotive tools that are useful for beginners and more advanced mechanics who work on vehicles and aircraft. Stick to simple socket sets and tool sets until your experience guides you into a specialized area that may require a more complex set of mechanics tools.
